Truffles

We don’t often get questions about truffles, but yes, they can be found in the Drome. We don’t operate truffle hunting holidays, it’s a winter thing, but perhaps it is a future project. All you need in theory is a dog or a pig, and a trowel. You can train a dog by starting them on gruyere cheese, moving on to the financially painful process of burying bits of truffle if they show promise. Pigs can be very good, but less practical. But it won’t be long before an e-nose hits the market, so the old methods may soon die out, and the world of truffle hunting may become too accessible.

It’s a secretive business, but certain species of tree in certain locations can yield reliably, and a good dog is worth it’s weight in truffles, or nearly. There are weekly truffle markets in the southern Drome starting in the autumn, and reckon on paying about 1500 euros a kilo, cash only.
